Fast Start Training and Youth
Protection Training In Online Learning Center (Part of MyScouting.org)
The Online Learning Center (OLC) was introduced by the National Council of the
Boy Scouts of America as a way for new and experienced Scouters to participate
in Youth Protection Training, Fast Start Training for your adult volunteer
position, and other selected topics of special interest. Any interested person
can take the training courses at any time.
One special advantage for registered
Scouters is that the MyScouting.org Online Learning Center will transmit
completed training records to the ScoutNET database jointly maintained by our
council and the National Council. Your online training makes our training
records more accurate when it comes to Youth Protection Training, Fast Start
Training, and other online courses. When you first enroll online in
MyScouting.org, be sure to use your BSA membership card to establish accurate
record-keeping of the training courses you complete.
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) for Boy Scouts
June 22 - June 27, 2009
Similar to Wood Badge, the National
Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) experience helps Boy Scouts ages 13-17 and
First Class rank (or higher) practice leadership skills as
part of a model troop in an outdoor setting under the leadership of highly
trained older Scouts and experienced Scouters. NYLT is held by the Monterey Bay
Area Council at Pico Blanco Scout Reservation during the summer break.
NYLT participation requires a level
of maturity certified by the Scoutmaster, and must agree to live up to the Scout
Oath and Law. Current details are contained in the attached NYLT registration
form.

Training), NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) or NAYLE (National Advanced

Basic Leader Training
Basic Leader
Training consists of various in-person training experiences conducted by members
of the district training teams. These National BSA training courses include New
Leader Essentials (for all adults), Leader Specific Training (various courses
for each adult position), and the Outdoor Skills Workshop (required for
Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Scout Coaches, and Assistant
Varsity Coaches).
Basic Leader
Training is offered by the districts throughout the year in various locations –
some of these courses are scheduled on the council calendar, with registration
flyers on this website, and others can be arranged with advance notice through
your district training team. Contact your district training chair or district
executive for the latest information on basic training.
University of
Scouting and Other Supplemental Training Courses
The University of Scouting (UOS) is an annual day of supplemental training
(“beyond basic”) designed so that all Scouters can come back every year and
learn more in-depth information on topics of special interest. The University of
Scouting includes special programs and guest speakers, and is usually held on
the fourth Saturday in January. UOS includes virtually all of the features of
the original Cub Scout Leaders Powwow. See the current UOS registration form for
details about course selection and registration.
Other supplemental training courses
include various specialty trainings, such as Trainer Development, Basic Leader
Outdoor Orientation (BALOO), Trek Safely, Climb on Safely, etc. See the council
calendar for announced dates, or contact your district training team to learn
about courses in nearby councils.
